Dylanâs throat constricted. When he and Adan talked about moving Brisa into her new house, he did not know it would take under two hours, including the driving time. She owned practically nothing.
âYou okay with this?â he asked Adan.
He glanced over at his friend. Adan rubbed a hand on his jaw.
âI didnât know she needs furniture and probably a bunch of other stuff, too. She said nothing.â
âShould we take her shopping?â Everything inside Dylan balked at the idea of walking away with Brisa still needing so much.
âMaybe she wonât fuss if we go to the secondhand store.â
Dylan shifted his truck into park and cut the engine. Then he dropped the trailer gate and started carrying things inside. The wheelchair ramp made it even easier to roll the dolly up the porch.
When Brisa tried to carry a box, he took it from her and used the dolly. âWeâve got this. You just tell us where everything goes.â
âThanks.â
After thirty minutes, they had the trailer unloaded. Dylan stowed the furniture mover and dolly. When he entered the house, he heard Brisa and Adan arguing.
âLet us take you to a secondhand store. You need a couch. End tables. Something for the living room.â
âI canât afford it, Adan. I barely have enough for groceries until payday.â
Dylan frowned. He typed a group text to his mami, cousins, and River. They would take care of Brisa and not take no for an answer.
Adan finally convinced Brisa to go with them to look at used furniture. A tremendous victory. He would pitch in for the cost with Adan.
When he parked at the secondhand store, Brisa shoved the truck door open without waiting for either of them. Then she slammed it shut, the force rocking his truck. He kind of understood her frustration. She probably didnât want anyone thinking she couldnât take care of her son. Itâs not what he thought. Between what he had learned as Wrangler92 and from their conversations, he knew things had been hard with her ex. He figured she probably got rid of anything that reminded her of him.
He entered the store and walked toward the furniture section. Many of the items were in great shape. Dylan hung back and let Adan run the show. After twenty minutes, Adan convinced her to let him buy enough furniture for her living room.
Dylan picked out a table for four that he figured she would like. He paid for that and had it loaded by the time the store workers brought the rest of the furniture to the loading dock. He and Adan made quick work of loading and securing it.
âDo you need anything else while weâre out?â Adan asked.
Brisa crossed her arms over her chest. âIâm fine, really.â
Dylan caught Adanâs attention in the rearview mirror. He shook his head slightly, and Adan let it go.
When they arrived back at her house, his mami, cousins, and sister-in-law stood on the front porch with arms full of grocery and household items. Perfect.
Dylan and Adan brought in the furniture. Then they headed back to the ranch for an afternoon of work.
